An Emergency was a 21-month period of 1975-77 in India's history. During this period, the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared nationwide Emergency by declaring that the national security of the country was in danger. President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed issued an Emergency under section 352 of the Constitution, which was effective from 25 June 1975. Through this, Indira Gandhi postponed democracy and took over the copyright of India's administration and postponed elections for an unlimited time. Several political opponents like Indira Gandhi's Jayprakash Narayan, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, George Fernandes, were arrested and imprisoned on the media's rights. North The League and some other organizations were banned. But the team stood firmly in front of the Andibanis to struggle.
Emergency was lifted on March 21, 1977, after the March 1977 Lok Sabha elections . In this election, Congress Party was defeated and Morarji Desai of Janata Party became India's first non- Congress Prime Minister. Indira Gandhi had to lose her Rae Bareli in their fortress.
Emergency is considered to be one of the most unfortunate events in the history of independent India.
June 12: Indira Gandhi was convicted by the Allahabad High Court by blaming her for misbehaviour in the elections. Gandhi was charged with misusing government officials and machinery in the 1971 election. He was banned for six years for contesting the Lok Sabha or the Assembly elections.
June 22: Several opposition leaders including Jay Prakash Narayan have organized a big rally in Ramlila Maidan in Delhi against the Emergency.
June 24: The Allahabad High Court's decision has given the Supreme Court a moratorium on certain conditions. It also allowed Indira Gandhi to remain a Member of Parliament. However, he clarified that it should not participate in Parliament's proceedings.
June 25: Emergency declaration has been announced in the country. Opposition leaders were arrested, while at the same time offices of important newspapers were discontinued.
June 30: Notification issued that the internal security law is being enforced. The arrest of those who raised voice against the Emergency started directly.
July 1: A 20-point program was announced for economic and social reforms.
July 5: 26 organizations like Jamaat-e-Islami, Ananda Marg, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, were banned.
July 23: Rajya Sabha approves emergency
July 24: Voting in the Lok Sabha with an emergency.
August 5: Internal Security Act was enforced.
